John Hoover, Ph.D.

A former McGraw-Hill divisional general manager and Walt Disney Company Marketing/Entertainment project director, John Hoover has been active in the executive coaching practice and the strategic talent management consulting practice at Partners in Human Resources International in New York City since 2006.  John is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and BusinessWeek best-selling author on leadership, organization development, and organizational behavior.  He is certified by the International Coach Federation and is an adjunct faculty member at Fielding Graduate University in Media Psychology, Organizational Design & Leadership, and at the American Management Association where he teaches communication skills, delegation, leadership, and strategic thinking. He recently lectured at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and coaches MBA students at the Yale School of Management.

 

John recently created the curriculum for a new graduate certificate at City University of New York’s Graduate School of Professional Studies.  The new program, Coaching in Organizational Context, integrates theory and practice of executive coaching with organization development, and organizational change and transformation as outlined in John’s co-authored 2009 book The Coaching Connection from Amacom Publishers.  John is currently teaching and developing new certificate programs for Managing the Coaching Function in Organizations through Fielding Graduate University based in Santa Barbara, California.  John has been consulting and coaching clients in entertainment, media, and publishing for over twenty years and has produced celebrity fundraising events in Los Angeles, Nashville, Phoenix, and Washington, DC that have raised millions of dollars for Childhelp USA, The March of Dimes, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, University of Southern California School of Fine Arts, and The Alliance for the Arts in Thousand Oaks, California.

John has played an instrumental role in designing, developing, and expanding the executive coaching and strategic talent management consulting practice at Partners in Human Resources International into dozens of new markets across the United States and around the world. He supervises an international coaching network in excess of 250 executive coaches.  His entrepreneurial spirit is evident in the movement to provide executive coaching and revenue-driven Strategic Talent Solutions and Organizational Design, Change, and Transformation in the context of global organizations.  John believes that building upon the richness of a diverse working population begins with recognizing and developing the unique strengths within each individual and creating opportunities for collaboration among team members to produce measurable project deliverables in a timely and cost-effective manner. As SVP of Global Contextual Coaching and strategic talent management consulting, John has designed and developed the current organization and supervises over 250 executive coaches and consultants under contract in cities across the United States, North America, and around the world.  In addition to vetting, hiring, training, and providing clinical supervision to Partners International coaches and consultants in 360-degree feedback, MBTI, and a battery of other assessment instruments, John is responsible for the design and quality delivery of practical business solutions for top-of-the-house CEOs, Presidents, and other Senior Executives at Fortune 500 companies, some of which are located in Australia, China, Continental Europe, India, Japan, Korea, South America, and the United Kingdom.  Active clients include ABC/Disney, Ace Insurance, ADP, Aflac, AIG, American Lawyer Media, Aeropostale, Avon, AXA-Equitable, BlackRock, Bloomberg, Campbell Soup Company, CIT, Digitas, Dow Jones, ESPN, Fitch Ratings, Forest Labs, Getty Images, Gray Advertising Worldwide, HBO, IBM, Initiative Media, MetLife, MediaBrands, Moore Capital, New York Stock Exchange, Pfizer, Prudential Financial, Schering-Plough, Sony, Standard & Poor’s, Sumitomo Bank, Time, Inc., Time Warner, Turner Broadcasting, UBS, Viacom, Warnaco, and Warner Music Group.

 

Additional Work Experience

 

Following a combined 13 years experience as a Divisional General Manager for audio and video publishing at McGraw-Hill and a Marketing/Entertainment Division project director for The Walt Disney Company, John became an executive coach, organization development consultant, and business media producer specializing in business processes, change management, organizational marketing and communications, cultural transformation, leadership development, organization development, design, and structure, and strategic talent management.  Prior to joining Partners in Human Resources International, he coached, consulted, produced media and live events, and/or provided marketing focus group research for clients including ABC Television, AIM Healthcare, American Mensa, Boeing/Rocketdyne, Childhelp USA, Delta Air Lines, The Disney Channel, Fielding Graduate University, HBO, IBM, The International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Hilton Hotels Corporation, Los Angeles Advertising Club, Motorola/Verizon, The National Federation of High School Associations, Printronix, Sanyo Fisher USA, Tennessee Department of Corrections, Wyoming Department of Corrections, and Xerox—helping them all learn and apply internal and external communication strategies, how to form and sustain internal and external client relationships, strategic alliances, and enhance individual and cross-function team performance and productivity. John’s first coaching assignment was with managers from the Tokyo Land Company in the 1980s who were part of the team opening Tokyo Disneyland.  John was asked to spend two years in Tokyo for Disney.

 

(1990-1996) John returned to graduate school and worked as a marriage, child, and family counseling intern, licensed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.  His supervised therapeutic work included individual and family therapy in community clinics, youth in crisis (emancipation training), residential therapy, group street gang counseling for the Orange County Probation Department, and life skills counseling for homeless families in residential transition.  He continues to do overnight volunteer work with the homeless population of New York City.

 

(1990-2006) A non-stop schedule of writing, publishing, developing and presenting seminars, producing new media, consulting, and executive coaching in leadership, management, communications, media marketing, and organization development for a wide variety of clients including:
