Linette S. Hwu is Vice President, Business & Legal
Affairs at Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI).
In her current capacity, she functions as SNI’s lead employment lawyer
and partners with a department of 45 Human Resources professionals to support
SNI’s business worldwide.
Previously, Ms. Hwu led the Business Affairs team at Travel
Channel in the negotiation and management of the network’s programming and
talent deals and business relationships with its production companies and
talent. In early 2010, following her
work on the December 2009 acquisition of Travel Channel by SNI, she co-chaired
Travel Channel’s integration into the Scripps Networks.
Ms. Hwu has been honored by CableFAX as one of the cable
industry’s Women on the Move (April 2009) and Most Influential Minorities
(September 2010), by NAMIC as one of its 2010 Luminaries, and by the Washington
DC/Baltimore chapter of Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) as an Emerging
Leader (October 2012). In October 2009,
she was a panelist at the International Bar Association’s annual conference in
Madrid (“Ownership and Clearance of User-Generated Content—Legal Challenges and
Pitfalls”), and in 2012, she spoke on the “Women on Top” panel at the Alliance
for Women in Media Foundation’s Symposium on Diversity: Defining Different in a Changing Society, and
at the Women in Law Empowerment Forum (East) program “Playing the Long
Game: Positioning Yourself for Career
Success.” She is currently serving as
the Outreach Chair on the board of WICT Washington DC/Baltimore and as the First
Vice President on the board of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company in Washington,
D.C., on which board she has served since 2005.
Prior to SNI, Ms. Hwu was Vice President, Legal/Commercial
Affairs & Operations for Travel Channel Media, and until May 2007, Vice
President, Legal Affairs for Discovery Communications, Inc. She began her career as an associate at the
law firm of Hogan & Hartson, LLP in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Hwu graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University
with a Bachelor of Arts in History and German Studies, and received her Juris
Doctor with honors from The University of Chicago Law School. In September 2008, she was a participant in
Boston University School of Management’s Pocket MBA for Lawyers program, and in
the summer of 2009, she also attended London Business
School’s Accelerated
Development Programme. She is admitted
to the State Bar of California and the District of Columbia Bar.
