WICT ANNOUNCES 2004 ACCOLADES WINNERS
-Judy McGrath, Suzanne Keenan, Showtime and HBO Recognized-
-Honorary Co-Chairs Announced-
Chantilly, VA- The Women in Cable & Telecommunications (WICT) Foundation today announced the recipients of the 2004 Accolades, WICT’s most prestigious awards. A committee comprised of industry leaders and WICT board members selected the 2004 Accolades honorees from among a strong pool of nominations. The 2004 Accolades will be presented at the 20th Annual WICT Foundation Benefit Gala, which will be held on November 3, 2004 at the Hilton Washington. The Forerunner Accolades, presented to the Best Programmer for Women in Cable and the Best Operator for Women in Cable as determined by the PAR Initiative, will be announced during the week of November 1, 2004. WICT also announced that executives from the 2004 WICT Leadership Circle will serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for the 20th Annual WICT Foundation Benefit Gala.
Woman of the Year- Judy McGrath, Chairman and CEO, MTV Networks Named Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks in July of 2004, Judy McGrath, who previously served as MTV Networks Group President, is responsible for MTV, MTV2, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, LOGO, Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, Spike TV, TV Land, Noggin, The N, MTV Networks Digital Suite, MTV Networks International and all of the company’s related consumer products and digital businesses. McGrath is known for continuing to drive pro-social programming as an integral part of the fabrics of all the networks. She got her start in the cable industry in 1981 as a copywriter in MTV’s On-Air Promotions and quickly rose through the ranks to Editorial Director, MTV; Executive Vice President and Creative Director, MTV and then President, MTV.
Woman to Watch- Suzanne Keenan, Comcast Cable Senior Vice President of Customer Service Suzanne Keenan is a driving force in Comcast’s ongoing commitment to improving the customer experience. In her role as Senior Vice President, she oversees all aspects of customer service operations and the development of customer service initiatives for more than 21 million customers and more than 15,000 Comcast customer service employees. A relative newcomer to cable, Keenan is a veteran of the customer service industry, having served as Vice President of Customer and Marketing Services for PECO Energy in Pennsylvania prior to joining Comcast in 1999.
Tribute Accolade- Documentary/Biographical- Showtime Networks, Inc. for “What’s Going On: Girls’ Education in India” This production traces the stories of three dynamic Indian children who demonstrate great differences due to varying accessibility to education. In developing countries around the world, millions of girls are denied one of the most basic human rights: an education. These three stories show the importance of education to all children, and especially girls, because when a girl is educated, she passes the benefits on to her family, her community and her country.
Tribute Accolade- Drama/Music/Variety/Comedy- Home Box Office (HBO) for “Iron Jawed Angels” Iron Jawed Angels recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: The struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on two defiant women, Alice Paul (Hillary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women’s-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women’s voting rights in 1920.
Executives from the WICT Leadership Circle companies will serve as honorary co-chairs for the event. The 2004 WICT Leadership Circle; Cox Communications, Comcast, MTV Networks,
Time Warner Cable and Charter Communications; provides the highest level of support for WICT’s programs, services and advocacy initiatives.
